I went to Sonoma Raceway today for the David Love Memorial Vintage Races. It was AMAZING! I had to restrain myself from turning into Orlove when he was at the Quail. Here are some pics from today. I also got to test out my new Canon 6D. I’m in love with it now. I’ll post the rest tomorrow.

Geez my photos look horrendous compared to yours. Hard to believe that one camera can produce such different results.

Oh that was today, I always miss the classic races because of work, My 240Z is being repaired right now so I couldn’t go in that anyway. It’s a fun circuit, I love elevation changes.

I think you win for best event today.

I won’t dispute that. The event was GLORIOUS! I had brought earplugs originally to watch the races but decided to just screw it and listen without them.

I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully it’s nothing major? Yeah, the circuit is definitely a great layout. The elevation changes are amazing. Walking out of the venue though...not fun.

You flatter me. Your 918 photo today is amazing though. To be fair, I was using the new 50mm f/1.8. It’s pretty awesome.

I went to a vintage race last year, but there was nothing on the level of TRs, Birdcages, or prewar Alfas

Not major, someone bumped into the left rear a bit and it has taken a little while to get the insurance stuff done. Cosmetic really. Pretty much everything is done otherwise, except the paint, it’s too expensive to do it properly at the moment so I have to wait. The hood is the main thing so I may just get a carbon hood. Is that Alfa a Per Sang? Looks like it, I would love one of those.

I’m looking at polarizers for my lens so that I can improve my photos...I don’t think I can get new lenses.

That sucks. Waiting for insurance is the worst. Not sure about the Alfa. It was hidden away on one of the side aisles. I was lucky enough to spot it and go to town on it with my camera. I heard from someone else it held its own against newer models on the track. Unfortunately I arrived after it had raced since I had a hangover from Friday. I would drive the crap out of it though if I were given the opportunity.

If you’re looking for recommendations, I recommend the B+W MRC circular polarizers. I was using one for these pictures. Very high quality and it has brass fittings so you don’t have the worry about it seizing onto the lens if you are in a humid area.

Thanks! I’ll have to go check it out.

No problem! Also, if you look at Hoya filters, just know they’re a pain to clean according to reviews. B+W filters apparently can be cleaned much more easily than the cheaper (although still good quality) Hoya filters. I’m a cheap person but I figure a few extra dollars is worth the ease down the line.

There is one just like it on Jay Leno’s Garage, worth a watch. Per Sang makes great stuff, exact copies, only I bet the metal is much better.

Good to know. I’m also a cheap person and I happened to notice that the Tiffen filters are much cheaper than B+W and Hoya filters, have you had experience with them?

I actually just ordered the new 50mm a couple hours ago, how do you like it? I can’t wait for it.
Great pictures by the way.

I’ve only ever used B+W filters since they came recommended by the internet. All I can say is the quality of B+W is definitely what you pay for. I’ve handled Tiffen filters on some friends’ equipment and they feel a little flimsy compared to the B+W filter. The density of the B+W filter is very confidence inspiring.

I couldn’t be happier with it. The way it captures colors are perfect for my preferences. I had a Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.4 (with a Sony a7) before making the switch to the Canon side and the new Canon 50mm is mighty impressive. The color rendering is really nice. Auto-focus is pretty quick. The sharpness is plenty at wide open. The metal mount is definitely a nice touch. I think my only complaint is the filter thread is 49mm as opposed to 58mm so I can’t double-dip with filters.
Thanks! I’m still trying to learn how to take proper pictures so hearing that they’re decent looking is a nice motivator.

HOLY CRAP THATS BEAUTIFUL!
Thats the only racetrack I’ve driven on. Can’t believe I’ve sorta shared pits with these cars.

I can honestly say I was losing my mind at how much history was there. And the fact that some of those cars were worth more than the entire block I live on didn’t help calm me down. If you like those, check these out:

I saw the link and Whoooaaaaaaaaa!
I would have had to excuse myself and find a bathroom lol
Do you live near Sonoma?

There were moments where I just muttered “oh my god” to myself.
Sort of. I live about an hour and a half south of it in the Bay Area.

Thats not too bad :) I like visiting California.

I just got mine yesterday. Coming from just a kit lens I’m in love. I’ve been dying to get a better lens but I just can’t spend a lot, so this was a good compromise. It’s so sharp and the 1.8 is awesome. I’ve already taken many more pictures than I should be just around the house.

California is amazing. I love it. People complain about California but where else can you get amazing weather, food and cars all in two distinct spots?

It’s an amazing bargain isn’t it? I’d recommend a circular polarizer when shooting out in the sun. The colors just come to life.

Agreed :)
